Abstract
The research aims to study the physical characteristics and pattern of ten fingerprints for used as a guideline for classifying and revealing type of imprints from any finger which found at the crime scene. By comparing the width length and amounts of minutiae of each fingerprint of the right and left hands from both males and females. Including an efficiency comparison counting method of minutiae points with the experts counted by themselves (Expert method) with the experts counted by using an Automated Fingerprints Identification System (AFIS method). The samples were analyzed by using One-way ANOVA and Independent samples t-test. The results revealed that the physical characteristics of 10 fingerprints showed the most loop pattern. The right and left thumbs having significantly greater width length and minutiae than the other fingers. The mean width and length of thumb was 1.95±.235 cm and 2.63±.249 cm, respectively. In addition, the width and length of right and left thumb of male were larger than female approximately 1.1 times. The different counting methods between the Expert and the AFIS method gave the same number of minutiae at the 95% confidence level. The data obtained from this research will be used as a preliminary database to predict the latent fingerprints that are formed from thumb impressions on the evidence, so lead to the connection of offenders by searching from the Department of Provincial Administration database quickly even while working in the field.
