Local Community Participatory Action Research (PAR) in Road Safety: A Case Study of Road Safety Project with Engineering Principle, Phlai Chumphon Sub District, Phitsanulok Province

Abstract

Road accidents are a problem that is very important to development of the country. According to the report of road safety situation by WHO mention that Thailand is the first in Southeast Asia with road accident deaths. Which this event can be solved by starting with community participation. This research aims to conduct participatory action research on road safety communities. The road safety audits to identify the contributing factors of the accident and hazardous location compare to the blackspot from the Hiyari Hatto road accident map. The results showed that the 50 community representatives were satisfied and able to apply the knowledge gained in road safety training to the risk mapping as much as possible. The Most of the risk factors found from road safety audits came from three major factors as no traffic signs, no traffic marking and inadequate of lighting electricity. While the road accident map by participation in the community can identify risk points and hazards in the community in accordance with the road safety audit team. The researcher selected the point of violence in the area to propose a policy solution to the municipality to prevent and solve road safety problems in the community.
