Abstract

The purpose of this research is to study the metallurgical structure and mechanical property in the bond line from dissimilar butt joints of C3064 brass with semi-solid metal 356 aluminum alloys by diffusion welding process. In the experiment, the size of prepared samples was 10×15×3 mm. The factors in the diffusion welding process were holding time for 60 and 120 min, welding temperature at 370, 430, and 490 ºC, welding pressure at 4 MPa, and under argon atmosphere at 4 liters per min during welding. After diffusion welding, the examination of its metallurgical structure and mechanical property was conducted. The results found that the welding temperature at 490 ºC and holding time for 120 min provided the maximum shear strength at 14.25 MPa. On the contrary, the welding temperature at 370 ºC with holding time for 60 min resulted the lowest shear strength at 8.42 MPa. The maximum hardness is at 135.45 HV for the welding temperature at 370 ºC with the holding time for 120 min. The microstructure was found to be changed in bond line and the grain size grew up when compared with the base microstructure. Besides, the diffusion from the higher concentration mixtures to the lower concentration mixtures was observed. According to statistical analysis, while the coefficient of determination R-square at 92.95 percentage is from controllable factors, the remaining 7.05 percentage is from uncontrollable factors.
