Abstract

This paper presents the study and the approach to improving the dragon jar factory layout using a simulation model. The plant layout has been arranged as the process type layout with five workstations. The material handling system deploys laborers and trolleys. However we found that the transportation path is reverse back and forth. As a result, there was waste in the production process. The objective of this research is to find an alternative to reduce the material transportation distance and maximize the factory space utilization by using the flow process chart, the from-to chart, and the relationship chart. The study started by creating a model to simulate the plant layout with Google SketchUp, and then simulated with FlexSim of the dragon jar production process and the layout of each workstation. Then, we analyzed the data from the sample factory that is the distance between workstations. We found that the original layout had a total distance of 8,830.22 meters. Then, three alternatives were proposed. The results showed that the second alternative yields the least total distance that 7,025.30 meters. It can be accounted for a 20.44% reduction from the original plant layout.
