Abstract
The objectives of this cross-sectional descriptive research aimed to investigate the level of health literacy and health promotion behaviors, and the relation between health literacy and health promotion behaviors among the elderly people at risk for high blood pressure in Thungkrachor sub-district, Bantak district, Tak province. The population consisted of 284 elderly people, 60 years old and above and classified as the hypertension risk groups. The data were collected by using a set of questionnaires. The data were analyzed by using percentage, mean, standard deviation, and the pearson product-moment correlation coefficient.
The study’s results indicated that the health literacy of Hypertension risk groups of the elderly was at the moderate level. Their understanding of health was very high, accessibility to data and health services, health communications, self-management in health, communication and media literacy, and decision-making selection for the most appropriate practices were at the low level. Health behaviors were found at the moderate level. The relations between health literacy and health promotion behaviors of the hypertension risk of the elderly groups were found in the five aspects, decision-making selection for the most appropriate practices, self-management in health, including data and health service accessibility, health communications, communication and media literacy. The collective health literacy for health promotion related statistically significant to health promotion behaviors of the hypertension risk of the elderly groups.
Therefore, services should be provided for the hypertension risk groups can access information and health services conveniently and thoroughly, including a variety of health information and media and development of enhancing knowledge in health and health behavior.
