Abstract

This objectives of the study were 1) to investigate managerial skills and competencies required for managerial staff within the modern auto parts industry; 2) to develop a generic competency framework for the targeted personnel; and 3) to create a managerial competency development handbook to provide guidance and support to targeted individuals in the modern auto parts industry. The sampling population contains specialists and managers of modern auto parts manufacturers located in Thailand’s Eastern Economic Corridor. As results, the developed competency model comprises 6 principal components and 30 sub-elements. The competency model is expected to improve the managers’ skills and performance so they can achieve career advancement. The 6 distinct elements of the models contain these skills and competencies: 1) innovation and technological, M=3.93; 2) financial management, M=3.85; 3) strategic management, M=4.72; 4) positive attitude and pleasant personality, M=4.57; and 5) human resource management capacity to create productive working environment, M=4.25; and 6) operational efficiency to facilitate cross-functional communication and all stages of operations (M=3.98). Apart from these basic elements, the competency model for effective administrative performance was found to include 30 sub-components. The model appropriateness was approved in a high level (M=4.30). The 6 competency-based development courses containing 44 instructional hours were devised to boost the managers’ desired capabilities and skills. Finally, the handbook practicality and justification for further implementation was strongly endorsed (M=4.50).
