Failure Assessment of Aircraft Rivet Installation Using Fault Tree Analysis

Abstract

Several aircraft structures are permanently fastened together with the aircraft rivets. If any of the parts are damaged by accident or corrosion, the Aircraft Maintenance Engineer Licensed need to have expertise in rivet installations. Rivet installation has been standard procedures. However, the standard procedure is not described in the detail. Thus, the trainee must do the practice to become proficient requires time and experience. Therefore, the purpose of this research aims to find the cause of the error in the practice procedure with Fault Tree Analysis (FTA) method and then applied the results of this research to develop the practice procedure or techniques. These results may be the trainee to quickly understand and become proficient. Which this research combines data on job evaluation and operational procedures of aircraft maintenance engineer licensed students, Civil Aviation Training Center in the academic year 2018 10 workpieces with 6 aircraft rivets installed per workpiece by Solid Shank Rivet, AN470AD4-4. The aircraft rivets attached to an aluminum alloy sheet metal material code 2024-T3. then the data that has been evaluated to analyze by FTA and calculate the probability of occurrence and the likelihood of occurrence. The result of FTA is classified into 3 types of common damage: common damage to the workpiece surface, common damage to the rivet head, and common damage to the rivet shank. The results of the probability of occurrence and the likelihood of occurrence found the common damage to the rivet head is the most likely to the likelihood of occurrence at 76%. The event is the most likely occurrence of damage being the latch head not close to the workpiece surface. It is based on unsteady aircraft rivet gun. This causes the rivet gun to slide out of the rivet head and the rivet gun hits the rivet head tilted or not at the rivet head. The other event of the incident was that the trainee had set the air pressure of rivet gun incorrectly and the layout was not properly. Therefore, the researcher recommends that the instructor should teach more emphasis on techniques and control of rivet guns to reduce damage of aircraft rivet installations.
