Abstract

This study aimed to examine (1) the level of risk perception regarding self-protection from pesticide use, (2) the level of preventive behaviors, and (3) the relationships between personal factors and preventive behaviors among farmers in Wang Mai Subdistrict, Wang Sombun District, Sa Kaeo Province. This quantitative study applied relevant behavioral theories. The sample comprised 274 registered farmers who used pesticides across nine villages within the service area of Ban Thung Kabin Subdistrict Health Promoting Hospital, selected using systematic random sampling based on the Krejcie and Morgan (1970) formula (confidence level = 0.95; margin of error = 0.05). Data were collected using a four-part questionnaire with verified content validity (IOC) and an overall reliability coefficient of 0.93. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, the Chi-square test, Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient, and Pearson’s correlation coefficient.
The results showed that the level of risk perception regarding pesticide self-protection was moderate, while the level of preventive behaviors was high. Educational level, marital status, and farming experience were significantly associated with preventive behaviors at the .05 level, whereas sex, age, and income were not. In addition, risk perception was positively correlated with preventive behaviors at a moderate level (r = .312, p < .01).
These findings suggest that relevant agencies should continuously promote education and risk perception among farmers to strengthen appropriate preventive behaviors and reduce long-term health impacts.
