Abstract

This research aimed to develop a facial cleansing gel formulated with shallot extract and natural scrub powders. The study investigated the effects of ethanol concentrations (15%, 50%, and 95%) on dry weight yield, antioxidant activities, the optimal drying temperature for scrub preparation, and the color stability of the formulated cleansing gels. The results revealed that extraction with 15% ethanol yielded the highest total phenolic content (87.02 mg of gallic acid equivalent [GAE]/g of extract) and the highest total flavonoid content (30.99 mg of rutin equivalent [RE]/g of extract). Furthermore, this specific extract exhibited the maximum antioxidant activity, as determined by DPPH (0.10 mg/mL) and FRAP (21.85 mg of ferrous sulfate equivalent [FeSO4]/g of extract) assays. Regarding the preparation of natural scrubs from mandarin orange, tangerine, and dragon fruit peels, the optimal condition was found to be hot-air drying at 50 °C for 72 hours. Following the formulation of the facial cleansing gels incorporating the shallot extract and natural scrubs, a one-week stability test demonstrated that the formulation containing mandarin orange peel scrub turned slightly darker yellow when stored at room temperature. Conversely, the gels containing tangerine peel and dragon fruit peel scrubs faded to a light yellow color when stored under accelerated conditions at 37 °C and 40 °C. This research provides valuable baseline data for the further development of functional cosmetic products, thereby effectively adding value to local resources and agricultural waste materials in a sustainable manner.
