GUIDELINES TO DESIGN MOTIF ON CERAMIC PRODUCTS FROM ORIGINAL PATTERNS OF LANNA LANTERNS, LAMPANG PROVINCE

Abstract

The objectives of this study were to 1) study the history of Lanna lanterns in Lampang province from past to present, 2) record the original patterns of Lanna lanterns and seek new design patterns adapted from the original patterns and 3) apply the motif design on ceramic products for food container sets. The results of this research showed that Lampang Lanna lanterns were built around 1897 A.D. influenced by Burmese lanterns and passed through the processes of making from many schools of craftsmanship. There has been transfers of knowledge body, customs and traditions and embedded with cultural identity through patterns.  120 patterns of Lampang Lanna lanterns were found and divided into the types of flowers, Zodiac signs, animals in Buddhist scriptures, Lord Buddha’s history including local way of life.  They were selected to be used in designing new patterns on ceramic products. The motif design of ceramic products of food container sets were selected from the original floral patterns totaled 10 pictures and re-designed anew to suit the product sets of bowls, dishes, plates, spoons and water cups.
