Rope and Piston Pwnp
Main Article Content
Abstract
Rope and piston pump is a hand-operated water lifting device for shallow well.
It composes of 4 parts, i.e. a rismg main pipe, a loop of nylon rope with a senes of
wooden piston, a car-tire wheel and handle, and a bottom part. A series of wooden pISton
is attached to a loop of nylon rope with a spacing of about 1.5 meter. The rope IS drivenby a car-tire wheel to move upward inside a 1.5 in. diameter of PVC pipe, while a column
of water above pistons is raised from the bottom up to the outlet of the pipe and overflow
to a gutter, then the rope is pull over the wheel and move down to enter the bottom end
of the pipe again with a guidance of the pump's bottom part. It works continuously in the
same manner as mentioned. The pump was installed with a shallow well and tested at 6.5
matre head. It wasfound that the pump produced a flow rate of 56 litres/minute with a
volumetric efficiency of 74.7 percent at a normal speed of 50 rpm
