Development and Efficiency Validation of the Training Set for the Subject of Basic Sheet Metal Welding on the Topic of Shielded Metal Arc Welding

Abstract

The objectives of this research were to: 1) develop a training set for the subject of Basic Sheet Metal Welding on the Topic of Shielded Metal Arc Welding, 2) validate the efficiency of the training set for the subject of Basic Sheet Metal Welding on the Topic of Shielded Metal Arc Welding, and 3) study the level of students’ satisfaction towards the training set for the subject of Basic Sheet Metal Welding on the Topic of Shielded Metal Arc Welding. The sample group used in the research included 14 students in Automotive Engineering Department, group 65, level 3 of Phatthalung Technical College in the first semester of academic year 2023 derived by purposive sampling technique.  The research tools consisted of a training set for the subject of Basic Sheet Metal Welding on the Topic of Shielded Metal Arc Welding, result recording forms, and satisfaction questionnaires. The data were analyzed by mean, percentage, and standard deviation.

The results of the research revealed that 1) the developed training set for the subject of Basic Sheet Metal Welding on the Topic of Shielded Metal Arc Welding consisted of a chair and a working bench attached with a stainless steel pole held by nuts for disassembling or assembling a work piece during practice. On the top of the working bench, another nut was installed for controlling the speed on feeding the welding wire and controlling the correct welding wire angle. The training set can work with 2 power systems, i.e., 220 volts electricity or a 12-volt battery. 2) The efficiency of the training set for the subject of Basic Sheet Metal Welding on the Topic of Shielded Metal Arc Welding showed that on the practice by 14 students, it appeared that the operation of the training set was appropriate in controlling welding wire feeding speed, the angle of the welding wire, and the arc distance. Moreover, the students were able to use the arc welding training set in all 3 mentioned activities, revealing that the training set can be used in real situation. Finally, 3) the students were highly satisfied with the training set for the subject of Basic Sheet Metal Welding on the Topic of Shielded Metal Arc Welding.
