Abstract

The purpose of this research was to test the benthic macroinvertebrate multimetric index which developed in Thailand (Thai MMI) to assess quality of streams and wadeable rivers in Lao People's Democratic Republic (Lao PDR). The results show that the original Thai MMI was unable to discriminate between reference sites and stressed sites. The Thai MMI was adjusted for both the 12 core metric scores and the evaluation criteria by using benthic macroinvertebrate data from Lao PDR. The adjusted index was called Thai MMILao. The Thai MMILao had assessed the quality of streams and wadeable rivers into 4 classes and the assessment results agreed with the Lao MMI. This study indicates that the 12 core metrics of Thai MMI have potential to assess the quality of water body in other neighboring countries after adjusting the index using benthic macroinvertebrate data from one's own country
