RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT OF ONLINE GAME – BASED COURSEWARE ON THE TOPIC OF COMPUTER VOCABULARY FOR SECOND YEAR VOCATIONAL CERTIFICATE STUDENTS

Abstract

This research and development aimed 1) to study computer vocabulary that connected in the basic operating system course for students in the second year of vocational certificate level, 2) to develop Online Game-Based Instruction on the topic of computer vocabulary for students in the second year of vocational certificate level that met quality and efficiency, and 3) to compare the academic achievement of students before and after learning with Online Game-Based Instruction on the topic of computer vocabulary. This research was divided into 2 steps. The first step was a computer vocabulary survey, Basic Operating System courses. The population was 7 teachers from the Department of Business Computer, Rayong Technical College. The second step was the development of Online Game-Based Instruction and compared the academic achievement of students. The samples were 65 students in the second year of vocational certificate level in Business Computer program, Rayong Technical College, Semester 1 in academic year 2019, selected by using cluster random sampling. The research instruments consisted of 1) the survey of computer vocabulary in basic operating system courses, 2) the Online Game-Based Instruction, 3) the quality assessment of online game-based instruction and 4) the learning achievement tests, consisting of 40 items with Index of Item-Objective Congruence (IOC) between 0.60-1.00, difficulty between 0.33-0.80, discrimination between 0.20- 0.73, and the reliability of 0.87.  The statistics used for data analysis were mean, standard deviation and hypothesis testing by t-test based on dependent samples which was determined the statistical significance at the .05 level.


The results of the research revealed that; the first step of the survey, The group of information was mostly male. Accounting for 57.14 percent and most of them had a bachelor's degree in computer Accounting for 57.14 percent found that teachers had selected 30 vocabularies to be developed into a lesson from 3 units, which were units 1-3 because they were basic vocabularies for computer learning. The second step found that 1) the quality of Online Game-Based Instruction on the topic of computer vocabulary was at a high level (gif.latex?\bar{x}= 4.16, S.D. = 0.13), 2) the effectiveness of Online Game-Based Instruction on the topic of computer vocabulary (E1/E2) was 80.46/82.50 which met the determined criteria and 3) the student achievement after learning through Online Game-Based Instruction was higher than before learning at the statistical significance at the .05 level.
