Applying Social Engineering for Localized Technology Development: A Case Study in Forage Management for Cattle Farmers

Abstract

This study applies the social engineering concept to localize technology and enhance forage management for cattle farmers in Pawong and Ko Taeo Sub-districts, Mueang District, Songkhla Province. The methodology integrated five social engineering tools (Fah Prathan, Life Clock, Development Timeline, Process Timeline, and M.I.C. Model) with fundamental quality tools (Check Sheets, Pareto Charts, and Fishbone Diagrams) to systematically identify root problems and formulate solutions. Additionally, an Abnormality Index (AI) assessed occupational health risks, alongside a design evaluation for the newly developed equipment. The findings indicated significant deficiencies in existing forage management practices and prevalent occupational health issues among farmers. The calculated AI score of 2.46 underscored a critical need for ergonomic interventions and heightened operational caution. Through the application of social engineering principles, comprehensive solutions were devised. These interventions included knowledge transfer regarding Napier grass cultivation to mitigate natural forage scarcity, alongside the design and fabrication of a mechanized grass chopper machine to supplant manual labor. Expert evaluations of the prototype across five dimensions yielded an aggregate mean score of 4.30, demonstrating its high viability for practical implementation. Beyond localized agricultural advancements, the integration of this social engineering framework significantly bolstered students' essential 21st-century soft skills, cultivating proficiencies in critical thinking.
