Abstract

The basic scheme of microscopic mechanical model is proposed to analyze the various mechanical behaviors of unsaturated coarse-grain soil. Physical quantities required for the proposed model are grain size distribution, soil particle density, void ratio and water content. The probability theory and inferential statistics are applied to relate the macroscopic physical quantities used in the conventional soil mechanics to the microscopic physical quantities in the proposed model.
